Jace and I leaned with our backs against the Polaris, arms crossed over our chests.

“Who was near the body?” I asked.

Jace snorted. “About sixty people.”

“That narrows it down,” Glo replied sarcastically.

I smiled. “Are we sure Cole didn’t have the Siren’s Scale on him?”

“Did you ask Brystal?” Jace asked.

I already had my phone out, pulling up Brystal’s number. The line clicked, and her voice, steady and calm, filled my ear.

“Tell me you’ve heard from PADA,” she said.

I winced. “Not yet, sorry. I need to ask you something, though. We’re looking for a relic. Did Cole have anything on him when you...when you prepared him for his autopsy?”

“No, nothing out of the ordinary that wasn’t mentioned last night. His wallet, keys, that kind of stuff.”

“That’s what I figured. Thanks. I promise to call when I hear from PADA.” I disconnected and slipped my phone in my pocket. “So, the killer knew about the necklace’s power, about what it could do. They took it, knowing it was the source of Cole’s...charisma?”

Jace nodded, his expression grim. “It seems like it. But that means our killer isn’t just some random thief. They knew Cole, and they knew about the necklace. Or at least they suspected about the Siren’s Scale. If they knew about the stash at his place, I have to think they’d have raided Cole’s house before we got there.”

“I wonder if they’ll try to fence the necklace?” I mused.

“Versus using it for themselves?” Jace seemed to weigh the idea. “It’s not a bad theory. Especially if they have a job that doesn’t require them to be charismatic. No sense holding on to it.”

“I think all our suspects would benefit from the Siren’s Scale.”

“Let’s go talk with Wendall Sterling and see if he’s been contacted about the Siren’s Scale today.” Jace pushed off the Polaris. “He told us last night he sometimes gets calls to fence relics.”
